Tsunami Aceh & Miyagi, Similar But Not The Same

Jakarta - The tsunami that struck Miyagi Prefecture and surrounding areas in Japan, on March 11, 2011, similar to the tsunami that hit the Aceh on December 26, 2004. Tsunami in the two regions are similar but not identical.

"Almost the same is happening in Japan and that in Aceh. All in Aceh before there is a large earthquake with a strength of 9.3. In Japan also the same, there was a big earthquake with a strength of 9,"said seismologist of ITB, Dr Hamzah Latif, in conversation with the AFP on Monday (3/14/2011).

Hamza estimates, the height of waves in Aceh reached 14-32 meters. While the tsunami wave height in Miyagi Prefecture and surrounding areas was estimated 6-14 meters.

Japan's earthquake in Aceh and suspected occurs because the process of subduction, ie, the collision of continental crust with oceanic plates. Subduction is then triggered a large magnitude earthquake or megathrust.

"But the difference in Japan the number of deaths, although it continued to be recorded, not as much as the death toll in Aceh,"said Hamza.

Every time a disaster, would not only result in loss of lives but also economic loss. No exception of Japan which is one of the world's developed countries, where many modern infrastructure many are damaged.

"In our who died about 128 thousand people, while in Japan, about 1,000 more. This is because an early warning in Japan which is good and great anticipation,"said Hamza.

According to him, most of Japan is due to the tsunami victims hit by collapsed buildings. When viewed damage from the tsunami than the number of victims, then the number of victims is relatively small.

"Japan did feel the area is often the earthquake and tsunami threat, so they make a good early warning system. They are also installing ocean bottom seismograph,"said Hamza.

In the 1980s, Japan took 19-20 minutes to issue a tsunami warning. But since 2008, the State of the Rising Sun it only takes 2 minutes to determine whether there is a tsunami.

"The helicopter was flying before the tsunami. Then the people already doing the procedure shortly after the quake, which turned on the television and listened to a tsunami warning," added an alumnus of the University of Tohoku, Japan, this.

In Japan, there is a kind of 'doors' for tsunami barrier not easily reach the housing area residents. 'Door' is the outer green belt, then the river parallel to the coast to control floods and tsunami, roads and farmland. After that, there is a new housing area residents.

"But many industrial areas close to the beach. Airportnya also only about 2.5 km from the coastline. Because many factories and industries on the coast, then that's taxable. We'll see on television the cars float like a toy. That's the Honda car factory Miyagi who export their products, "explains Hamza.

Aceh tsunami occurred after the previous earthquake measuring 9.3 Richter stomping. Quake had a depth of 10 km. In that event, more than 120,000 people were killed and more than 90,000 people missing. This earthquake had a major impact to the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, the East Coast of India, Sri Lanka, even to the East Coast of Africa.

On 11 March, Japan was rocked by an earthquake measuring 9 with a depth of 15-24 km. The quake triggered a tsunami that struck Sendai and its environs. More than 1,600 people dead and thousands missing. Earthquake Japan also had a major impact down to Indonesia, Taiwan, Russia, Marcus Island, Guam, the Philippines and the United States.
